How to Tell If You Have Rats in Your Home

Rats are one of the most common pest problems in the UK, but they're also one of the most difficult to detect early. By the time most homeowners realise they have a problem, the infestation is often already significant.

Key Signs of a Rat Infestation

The most obvious sign is droppings. Rat droppings are dark brown, roughly the size of a large grain of rice, and are typically found along walls, in cupboards, or under sinks. Fresh droppings are dark and moist; older ones are grey and crumbly.

Gnaw marks are another tell-tale sign. Rats have teeth that grow continuously and must be worn down by gnawing. Look for marks on wood, plastic pipes, food packaging, and even electrical cables — the latter being a serious fire hazard.

At night, you may hear scratching or scurrying sounds in walls, ceilings, or under floorboards. Rats are primarily nocturnal, so this is often the first thing homeowners notice.
